Then came that time of the year. That is, the time when tasks and projects must be completed and reported. We evaluate on what went well and what we can do better next time, next year. Part of what we are doing at this time is, by and large, recognising the efforts made in the outcome of the work. Recognition is both something we give and receive.

Most of us have probably given praise to others for a good job, for improving the team or being a good colleague. The part of recognition that I would like to address here is when it has a life in us. When we meet the recognition in ourselves – with ourselves, each one of us.

Meaning of self-recognition

In the Large Danish Encyclopaedia, you can read about recognition, where it says that a person’s self-understanding depends on the way it sees other people. And that recognition must go both ways to succeed. If one party does not recognise the other, then the relationship loses meaning.

Recognising yourself means believing in yourself and showing respect for all that is essential in you. When you believe in yourself, praise, and acknowledge yourself, then it is also easier to pass it on to others.

Exercise – Give the recognition to yourself

It is often between acknowledging and recognition or praising oneself that there can be a long way to go. To bring the two closer together, try to work on these questions:

Look at what you are and do, for example, what will you acknowledge yourself for in the year 2021?

In relation to what you have just answered, what would you like to recognise yourself for?

Stop! How does it feel when you recognise yourself? What are you experiencing?

If it feels good – do not forget to praise yourself regularly.

Hopefully this year’s work and results feel a little better now! You have strengthened the balance between acknowledgement and recognition, the balance between knowledge and feeling. The basis for passing on the recognition to others has also been strengthened.
